Bavaria House

The “Bavaria House Jane Isaan” in Soi Bang Niang cannot be overlooked. Initially, the name surprised, because Bavaria will not necessarily match up with the North-east of Thailand, the Isaan. But the apparent inconsistency clears up quickly: Tom, a likeable “Bavarian” and his wife Jane, who comes from the North-east, commonly operate this restaurant. While Tom originates from a well-known family in the restaurant business, Jane learned to cook German with his mother for 6 years. Through years of experience in the restaurant business Bavaria House stands out from all others in terms of quality and thoughtful service.

Bavaria House opened already in 2009. Apart from typical German dishes like schnitzel, goulash, roast pork and cheese noodles, a variety of Thai dishes is offered, which are prepared really authentic. An absolute highlight is grilled chicken barbecued in “traditional German” style, but served with 7 different herbs “Thai Style”. The highlight on the dessert list is “Grandma’s cheesecake.” The different coffees are on Arabica basis and match with the standard in Germany and Austria.

Som Tam Thai…Papaya Salad

Som Tam

A very popular Thai dish is the famous Som Tam Thai, the Papaya Salad… not only for Thai people, for tourists too: …fresh ingredients, exceedingly healthy, refreshing and quick and easy to prepare.

You want to serve this salad once you are back home? Voila, …here we present the corresponding recipe: For the preparation you need a mortar, preferrably an original one “Made in Thailand”, which you can buy at markets or in “Asia-Shops” in your home country. In Thailand these high wooden mortars are called “Pock Pock”, and Thai people use them especially for this tasty salad.

The ingredients are: one unripe, green papaya, 5-10 green jalapeno pepper pods, 5 garlic cloves, 50 gr. dried shrimps, 8 cocktail tomatoes, 3-4 long green French beans, 200 gr. bean sprouts, 60 gr. fish sauce “Nam Pla”, 1 ½ soup spoons of palm sugar, the juice of 1 or 2 limes, and 100 gr. unsalted and unroasted peanuts.

Pleasant meal with cozy atmosphere at Bussaba Thai Restaurant.

Bussaba Restaurant

Located on the busy four-lane highway, it is a pleasant surprise to find this cozy eatery. For five years this restaurant was previously an internet café for local expats and Thais under the name “Coffee Arthit”. The owner, Khun Raweephat from Krabi, has created a larger and more comfortable space which he renamed “Bussaba Thai Restuarant”.
What separates Bussaba from other restuarants in the area is its simple yet attractive decoration. The warm light enhances 22 Thai style wooden tables and bamboo-browned chairs. The staff are very friendly, all dressed smartly in black and very knowledable about their menu.
For a perfect start to a hot summer afternoon, try their “Bussaba Special“ drink that comes in a bright fuchsia colour. A tall glass of red Dragonfruit mixed with yoghurt and local honey is perfect to soothe your soul in the heat. Also on offer is a good selection of wine from different regions to pair with Thai and International dishes. You just have to try their seafood dishes when you visit this nosherie. Tiger Prawn Panang is very rich with tasty homemade curry and sweet creamy coconut milk. Grilled snapper with garlic pepper is also a must try if you are looking for fresh fish from the Andaman Sea.
