Health and Wellness: Sleep

How much sleep does a person need? Some people say that they are not fit with less than ten hours nightly rest, while others claim to get along with only four hours of sleep. How many hours of sleep are necessary appears to be very different from person to person. Most people are at ease with seven to eight hours. Scientists now distinguish different types of sleepers that are obviously genetic. There are short sleepers who feel recovered after 4 to 5 hours and long sleepers, who are subjectively satisfied and recovered only after 9 to 10 hours. There are early risers, who lie in bed long before midnight and get up early, as well as late sleepers who fall asleep well after midnight, and accordingly wake up late in the forenoon.

Nutrition

Those, who want to eat healthy and like to compose an appropriate nutritional scheme, often find it difficult to make the right decision. The range offered in supermarkets is often not clear and the appearance of new food, beverages and      nutritional supplements for which intensive advertising is done, confuses the buyer.

As with many things in everyday life, the right balance in nutrition has to be found dependent on age, health condition and energy needs. Kids like other food than adults. Older people have a lower energy requirement, as young people, workers or athletes. Who wants to lose weight or is diabetic must pay attention to other rules than a person who is underweight. And not everyone wants to be a vegetarian and make future purchases in the health food store. In addition, a balanced nutrition can prevent diseases and disease processes may be influenced positively.

Yoga

Yoga is commonly known as a generic term for a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline and aims to use meditation to attain spiritual insight and tranquility. It is therefore seen as a process of interiorization or ascent of consciousness. Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy with a high level of commitment is called a yogi or yogini.

Yoga might go back to ascetic practices for concentration and to bodily postures used by Vedic priests in the mid 3rd millennium BC. The term “yoga” was first found in a Hindu scripture from 400 BC, where it was  defined as the steady control of the senses and a cessation of mental activity, which liberates from all worldly identification and the cycle of birth and death and finds realization of identity with the “Supreme Being”. It was further developed in early Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism during Indian Antiquity, in the 2nd to 5th century CE.

Water is Life

Water is the lifeblood of earth and all human beings, and one of the most important substances for our body. All life evolved out of the water, also mankind. Our body consist of about two-thirds of water; therefore a balanced water budget is an important prerequisite for the functioning of our body.

The human body needs water as a vehicle, coolant, solvent and building material. As it circulates through the body and carries out its functions, we loose more than 2.5 litres of fluid every day. Most is excreted through the bladder, the rest through the intestines, lungs and skin.

These losses must be compensated daily and well distributed throughout the day because water shortage can quickly lead to serious health problems. Water transports essential nutrients and vital substances into each cell of our body and ensures that waste products and toxins are excreted through the kidneys. As most metabolites can be excreted only dissolved in water, our body needs a sufficient amount of liquid.
