Golf in Khao Lak

Navy Golf Course

Got the Golfing Blues?

We all know that golfers take their sport seriously, very seriously! So when they are used to taking to the freeways regularly it is often a wrench to go on holiday. Some take their equipment with them and enjoy playing in a different location and sometimes different environment. Often golfers thinking about or actually visiting Khao Lak don’t realise that they can enjoy their sport in a very different and exciting location just 15 minutes away from the main areas of Khao Lak.

Golf originally was the privilege of members of the private club on the Royal Navy Base at Tab Lamu, established in 2001. Most people headed for the Similan Islands, Koh Tachai and diving liveaboards pass the entrance on their way to and from the pier. Although it is now open to non-members and actively encourages holiday makers to play it is located on a very active Naval Base so you need to pass through a security barrier at the entrance. However, as you approach the course you may think you have entered a fantasy world as the course’s theme is the famous Popeye cartoon series with various life size statues of the main characters at various places. Popeye was a Sailor Man after all though! The 18-hole, par 72 course consists of 7,160 metres spread across 5 fairways. It consists of 4 par 5s, 4 par 3s and 10 par 4s. It is maintained by the Royal Thai Navy so is always immaculate and kept to the highest standards. Its location in a tropical setting right by the beautiful Son Ngam Beach presents a wonderful sight which may lead to distracting some and resulting in wayward shots into a very large water hazard – the Andaman Sea. Green fees are 1600 baht and you can rent clubs, bag and golf shoes from the fully equipped clubhouse which serves refreshments and meals. The clubhouse also has a small shop for purchasing any last minute golfing equipment you might need and caddies are available – very advisable in the heat, as is an early start! There are refreshment stands throughout the course ready to serve you a cold water or beer but leaving the beer until the 19th Hole is more enjoyable. While Dad or Mum are enjoying a round of golf other members of the family, especially the kids can enjoy visiting the Royal Thai Sea Turtle Conservation Centre which is just up the road from the course – but that’s another story!

The course is open daily from 06:30 to 18:00 and you can book tee-off times and transport at various agencies in Khao Lak, such as  ECO Khao Lak Adventure , Green Andaman Travel. or Khao Lak Land Discovery So no more blues, head for the greens at Tab Lamu!
